“Fable III isn’t an RPG.” – Molyneux

17 Comments February 13th, 2010

Peter Molyneux has said he no longer considers Fable an RPG series – labeling Fable III as “more like an action adventure”.

The news comes after the revelation that the third iteration in the RPG series doesn’t feature a health bar or HUD. Instead, if the hero’s life is in danger, the screen will inform the character by changing colour – in a similar way to Modern Warfare.

Molyneux has also scrapped the previous Fable game’s expression system for a ‘touch’ mechanic, which allows players to hug, shake, fondle, drag and more.

“I’m not sure I even call Fable an RPG anymore,” he said at X10 last night. “Certainly not a 1990s RPG, for sure.

“In a way, you could look at it and say it’s like an action adventure. There’s a lot of drama, there a lot of story, there’s a lot of emotion in there – but with leveling up. I love that leveling up.

“I’m not the sort of person that likes being given a pre-planned character and told “this is you no matter what”.

(At the risk of some of the feeble-minded not getting the joke, I'll make it anyway.)

I am disappointment in you're grammar.

The nature of games has been an ever-evolving one. There was a time when Ishar: Legend of the Fortress was considered just about the height of modern rpg/adventure gaming, and yet most of the accepted, tried and tested functions and mechanics of that era have been laid by the wayside for new and innovative ways of making a challenging and enjoyable game.
To try and compare games to each other (even games within a series) can often be counter-productive. For instance, whereas the format for final fantasy has been essentially unchanged since it's inception, the Legend of Zelda, Mario and a host of others have been through at least one, often two or three major changes since their original titles appeared.
I for one applaud Mr. Molyneux for his constant willingness to take a game which has won global success and acclaim, and totally restructure it, with the courage to remove parts which have been loved and yet find a way of making something anew which never deviates from the core atmosphere and ethos of the world he has created.
    Three cheers for Fable!

Hate to say it but one of THE only reasons I even started playing fable in the first place is because was an RPG with morality factors like KOTOR. What you do alters the world in which you work. BUT now the fad is do what we tell you and enjoy it. I hate either or choices and I really hate you must choices like the spire or the torture room. What's next no stat sheet. I mean I don't need a health bar but hp-mp figures as well as a measure of how well I can do What would be nice. And maybe let me choose not to do anything (Quests) if I want. also it would be nice if you must move away from the tried and true d20 type system that one should have learn able fighting style movements-combos prince of Persia or the newer mortal kombat type of thing could be very fun to lay waste with for hours but I digress chances' are that it will look very pretty but fall very short of promises and hopes.

I only wish people could appreciate the beauty of the game itself evolving just like Albion and the Hero evolve. And FINALLY, a group of games that isn't afraid to take the risk of changing to avoid the possibility of creating an endless string of identical games.
(ie.: Grand Theft Auto, Rainbow 6, Metal Gear, Halo, Call of Duty, and (I hate to say it) Final Fantasy until they went MMO.)

It's refreshing to see a game that keeps the same spirit without stagnating and getting boring, like many of those listed above.

I can't give a full review until I've played the game, of course, but I'm very eager to see what they've come up with, and knowing that it will be significantly different BEFORE I buy it is appreciated.

I saw the interview. Great news. I like the removal of my health bar. I only hope there's a magic bar again.

I'd have to disagree about the mana bar, but a revamped casting system would rock.

I have played every Fable game so far including the lost chapters but something has been missing in every game or I should say something has been there that shouldn't have. That would be that the guards are all knowing somehow, I mean that when I am out in the middle of nowhere and have a good/evil person from town or a traveling merchant following me and I kill them and we where all alone how do the guards know that I (The Hero / Villian) killed them. Seeing how the new touch feature in Fable three allows you to drag people against their will I suggest that you have them scream when they are being dragged or have a coerce/sooth button so that you could smack them across the face if they started screaming for help if you are an "Evil" character or agree that no harm would come to them if you are a "Good" character.

If you agree with me please add a comment onto this post / keep repeating this message until some one from Lionhead sees it.

    My deepest regards, Lokithedamned
